Collaborating with Local Conservation Leaders
Conservation starts with collaboration. We work closely with rangers, local communities, and organizations like the Snow Leopard Conservation Foundation(SLCF), Goviin Khulan Association, World Wildlife Fund (WWF), The Nature Conservancy (TNC), Mongol Ecology Center (MEC), Mongolian Bird Conservation Center (MBCC) and others. These partnerships bring together local expertise and international resources to protect Mongolia’s biodiversity.
Our initiatives include:
- Launching a Ranger Discount Program provides rangers exclusive travel opportunities to experience Mongolia’s rich culture and wilderness.
- Supporting the Rally for Rangers project of Mongol Ecology Center, which equips national park rangers around the world with the tools they need to monitor and safeguard endangered species. Read more about their stories on their website.
- Funding training programs for rangers to strengthen conservation efforts in the field.
- Supporting research of endangered species.
- Helping create interpretive signs for trails and park entrances to enhance visitor experience in parks around the country.
These efforts empower the people on the front lines of conservation while creating lasting benefits for Mongolia’s wildlife.
Funding Conservation Through Tourism
When you book a tour with Mongolia Quest, you directly support conservation efforts. Our NGO, the Ulaanbaatar Tourism Association, promotes sustainable tourism in Mongolia, ensuring a positive impact on the environment and local communities.
For example, when you book our “Meeting & Protecting Gobi Khulan” tour, a portion of the proceeds will support the Goviin Khulan Association’s efforts to protect the Wild Khulan in the Gobi Desert.
Additionally, our tours fund vital conservation projects across several national parks, including Hustai National Park, a cornerstone of Mongolia’s conservation efforts. Hustai is renowned for the successful reintroduction of the Takhi ( aka Przewalski’s horse), the only true wild horse species still in existence. Once extinct in the wild, this species has seen a remarkable resurgence, with its population steadily growing within the park. Hustai also provides sanctuary to over 220 bird species, including the globally threatened Saker falcon and Steppe eagle, alongside diverse mammals such as Mongolian gazelles, wolves, and red foxes.
National parks in Mongolia account for approximately 80% of the country’s tourist attractions, playing a pivotal role in both conservation and tourism. With an ambitious national goal to protect 30% of Mongolia’s territory by 2030, sustainable tourism is crucial. Poorly managed tourism can harm these fragile ecosystems, but when guided responsibly, it becomes a powerful tool to support protected areas, preserve nature, and safeguard wildlife.
Tour funds will help:
- Purchase essential research equipment.
- Support field studies to monitor wildlife.
- Involve local herders in protecting habitats.
This model of conservation-focused tourism creates a win-win situation: travelers enjoy meaningful experiences, while their money provides critical resources for protecting Mongolia’s ecosystems.
Partnering with Mongolian Bird Conservation Center (MBCC)
Bird enthusiasts will appreciate our partnership with the Mongolian Bird Conservation Center (MBCC). Their expert researchers guide birdwatching tours for Mongolia Quest, using the proceeds to fund studies on breeding ecology, habitat use, and bird migration. This collaboration allows us to promote science-based, sustainable tourism while supporting vital conservation projects.
We were honored to contribute to the next generation’s conservation efforts by leading a session at the first Chukh Lake Children’s Camp 2024, organized by the Mongolian Bird Conservation Center’s Chukh Bird Research Station. Held from July 28 to August 3, 2024, the camp was supported by the Ramsar Regional Center-East Asia (RRC-EA) under the project to promote community participation in protecting the wetlands of Mongolia’s Ramsar sites.
Our session focused on inspiring young minds about bird conservation. We thank our partners for their dedication and look forward to supporting these impactful initiatives in the future!
Eco-Tourism Practices for a Sustainable Future
As the global conservation community intensifies its efforts to combat habitat loss and climate change, Mongolia’s wildlife is at the heart of these critical battles. Our tours not only offer an unforgettable experience but align with worldwide efforts to protect endangered species and their habitats.
We strive to minimize our environmental impact and operate sustainably.
- Waste is reduced during tours, and interactions with wildlife are carefully managed to avoid disturbance.
- Our itineraries are designed to respect migration patterns and wildlife habitats.
These small steps make a big difference, ensuring that Mongolia’s natural beauty remains unspoiled for future generations.
