Trip Map & Itinerary

Map showing the route from Ulaanbaatar to Kharakhorum and Hustai National Park.
Day 1. Kharakhorum

After breakfast, drive to kharakhorum (6-7 hours), stopping at Moltsog Sand Dunes for lunch. Kharakhorum, once the capital under Ogedei Khan, is set in the Orkhon River Valley, rich with archaeological sites, including ancient burial sites and ruins predating Chinggis Khan. Destroyed by the Ming Dynasty in the 14th century, its remains were used to build the Erdene Zuu Monastery. In the evening, enjoy optional hikes or visit a nomadic herder family. Dinner and overnight at a local ger camp. (Ger Camp; L, D)

Day 2. Kharakhorum/Hustai National Park

After breakfast at the ger camp, visit the Erdene Zuu Monastery and the newly built Kharakhorum Museum. After lunch, drive back to Ulaanbaatar, stopping at Hustai National Park for dinner and overnight. Hustai is one of three sites where the wild Takhi, or Przewalski’s Horse, has been reintroduced. Extinct in the wild in Mongolia by the late 1960s, these horses were bred in European zoos and reintroduced into three habitats. In Hustai, we’ll have the chance to see these majestic horses in their natural steppe habitat—one of the few successful reintroductions of a large mammal after local extinction. (Ger Camp; B, L, D)

Day 3. Ulaanbaatar

In the morning, explore the park with an optional visit to a local herder family and the Ongot monuments—ancient stone structures located just outside the western border of Khustai National Park, composed of several granite statues. These monuments date back to the Turkic period, between the 6th and 8th centuries. After exploring the site, enjoy lunch at the camp before returning to Ulaanbaatar in the afternoon, arriving before dinner. (B, L)
